Open Playfulness – Engage your mind with Buddhi Yoga

Yoga has steadily grown more and more popular over the years. While the east practices it on a more spiritual and religious level, the west has embraced it for its numerous health benefits. We all love the way how yoga strengthens our body, stretches our muscles and not to forget how deeply it nourishes our mind. Yoga is vast, and it is practiced in different parts of the world. Needless to say, each one of us has enjoyed the benefits of this magical practice at some or other points in your life. But did we ever made efforts to reach out to something out of the popular Yoga practices, which cannot only take hold on our laziness but can even bring with itself an abundance of fun and playfulness?

We didn’t, but the Direct Create knows someone who has not only made the difference by making efforts to discover something exciting, but also reached out to the platform of success.

That person is Aman Gopal Sureka, an IT entrepreneur from Kolkata.

Let us enrich our minds and grease our thought processes with the journey of this genius man of reviving the long lost Buddhi Yoga Game.

Here is the story.

Sureka stumbled upon this long lost Buddhi Yoga game three years ago while searching for innovative Diwali gifts for his clients to replace the standard hampers of sweets and dry fruits. While he was trying to figure out the best gifting options, he fell in love with this game.

Before going deeper into the revival process of this game, let me introduce you to what Buddhi Yoga actually is…

What is Buddhi Yoga ?

The word “yoga” comes from the Sanskrit root “yuj”, which means “to join” or “to yoke”. Buddhi, one of the wives of Lord Ganesha, is the intellectual faculty. It is the power of the human mind to form and retain concepts, reason, and judge, comprehend and understand. Buddhi Yoga is the “joining” of the buddhi to the karma, or actions.

Buddhi-yoga is the yoga of devotional service, which can introduce us to perceptions of the Supreme Lord. None of the other yoga processes, such as haṭha-yoga or rāja-yoga, can bring one’s mind to a peaceful platform like Buddhi Yoga can do. It lies far above these yoga practices, which are mostly physical disciplines. It is a spiritual discipline for self-realization. A realization, which is a full perception of the non-dual Absolute Truth, whereby one sees everything resting in the Supreme Lord and the Supreme Lord in everything.

In a nutshell…..the practice of acting with awareness.

Purpose of Buddhi Yoga

The purpose of Buddhi Yoga is to guide the human intellect. Darwin propounded that we come from apes. Darwinians believed that we “improve” and “evolve” every single day and site genetic trends to cement their claim. The Vedas believed in a cycle of the “Yugas”. The Vedantins believe that living beings transition in a pre-defined cycle of intellect. The “Sata Yuga” is the purest and highest form of existence and the “Kali Yuga” or “Kala Yuga” the last in the phases of the “falling intellect”.

Back to the story of Buddhi Yoga Game…

After discovering his passion and love towards the Buddhi Yoga, Mr. Sureka never looked back.  All he could think of was the methodologies and keys to populate this enticing game in the best possible manner.

His excitement knew no bounds when he caught the first glimpse of a game-board held by Wellcome Trust in London. The joy, however, did not come cheap — Sureka had to pay £70 for a glimpse of what was once an Indian treasure. But he says it was “absolutely worth it”.

About the Game

To understand the game of buddhi yoga, one has to play it more than occasionally; it has to be cherished as a way of being.

Buddhi Yoga takes to the spiritualistic philosophy and steers away from “the survival of the fittest” story. If practiced regularly it reveals the “karma yoga” path towards salvation. Salvation or moksha is symbolized as “Vaikuṇṭha” in this game.

We understand knowledge as science. “Science” strives to resolve the apparent contradictions in the universe and in man. An example of this is wave-particle duality. “The ancients” were acutely aware of the need for the player – the particle – to meet her chakras – individual fields of energy. They devised methods to achieve this through different modes of perception and experience. The game of Buddhi Yoga, like other forms of Yoga, is one such method.

How is this achieved ?

The player, landing in a cell, would view herself through the prism of that cell and reflect on her being with this perspective. This way she would, through repeated attempts, understand herself, her society and the universe more completely. She would find her place, with everything else in the universe and understand her importance and her dharma (sudharma).

Sureka’s passion is something that he indulges in whenever he can get some time off from his day job as an IT services and ERP consultant to leading corporates in the country. When asked what he personally gets out of this, the answer is quick to come: play, fun and deep philosophy. Sureka is one of the few people in the country to have undertaken the task of reviving an ancient tradition that could be of signal benefit to current notions of culture and society. As one sits down to play another game of ‘Gyan Chaupar’ or ‘Golok Dham’, the long-dulled and forgotten playful roots of Indian culture come back to mind and even deep philosophy seems fun. What is now needed is to get more people to join the game. Roll the die or throw the cowrie shells and maybe you will end up knowing yourself better.
