Pashmina is a fine type of cashmere wool. The textiles made from it were first woven in Kashmir. The wool comes from four distinct breeds of the Cashmere goat. These shawls are hand spun, and woven in Kashmir and Nepal, and made from fine cashmere fiber.
Thanks to the cold temperatures and high altitude of the Himalayas, the quality of wool produced by the goats ensures one of the finest and softest textiles in the world. There are several different qualities of pashmina but the dry climate in the high mountains allows the goats to produce a unique softness and incomparable quality of wool. The goats that live in elevations higher than 4,000 m are groomed to yield the longest and silkiest of hairs. Those fibres are then sorted and cleaned by hand and brought from the Himalayas to the valley. The hairs are then spun by hand and woven very carefully following old ancestral traditions on a manual hand loom.
The major centre of Pashmina fabric production is the old district of Srinagar, capital of Indian Kashmir. The approximate craft time put into producing a single Pashmina stole (70x200cm) is 180 hours.
